How We Select Host Families
Host families contact EF through many sources. The majority hear about us through networking, which means they know of someone who has hosted with us before and become interested themselves. Many families have hosted several times and are very familiar with the program.
Step 1: Application and reference forms
EF staff will send the interested family the required application and reference forms. Even returning families must go through the entire process, to ensure top quality.
Step 2: Reference check
When we receive the packet back, we thoroughly inspect the forms. We want to be certain this family would make a good host family for our students.
Step 3: Personal interview
If the family seems to be a good potential host, we will set up an interview in their home. All family members are required to attend. We carefully screen to find out why the family is interested and determine if the environment is a good one for a student. We want all members to be excited about hosting, but also to have realistic expectations of the exchange year.
Step 4: Acceptance
It is only after thoroughly evaluating all of the information we have received including the application materials, the reference check, and the interview that a panel of EF representatives decides if the family is of the highest standards for our students.
Step 5: Preparing the host family
We will hold a special Host Family Orientation which details what responsibilities families have, what to expect throughout the year and a lot of other practical information involved in hosting. International Exchange Coordinators, like those who first interview the potential host family, keep in close contact with the host families throughout the year.
